What is Achilles Tendon Injury?

Achilles Tendon Injury is a large ropelike band of fibrous tissue which connects the powerful calf muscle and it is inflammation of the tendon and it is very painful, it is also known as heel cord. It is mostly happens on the bottom half of the lower leg. Achilles tendons can also be occurs because of medication side effects or crushing. It depends upon persons speed, terrain and additional weight. It was found 400 years ago by Ambroise pare.

What are the Causes of Achilles Tendon Injury?

  • The actual reason of Achilles Tendon Injury is not found yet.
  • Lack of flexibility is the normal cause of Achilles Tendon Injury.
  • Small stretch injury is also causes to painful Achilles Tendon Injury.
  • Overuse of improper footwear, side effects of medicine can be reason for achilles tendon injury.
  • Accident may also occur this disease.
  • This kind of disease occur mostly by ballistic type sports such as tennis, basketball, track etc.
  • Tight calf muscles and weak calf muscles both are the reason of Achilles Tendon Injury.
  • Uphill running, cyclists and low saddle height may also cause to this disease.
  • Stiff sole can also create this disease.
  • Illnesses like arthritis and diabetes can also increase the risk of disease.
  • Some antibiotics can also increase this disease.
  • Lack of warming up is a reason for this disease.

Symptoms of Achilles Tendon Injury

  • Pain and irritation near the heel area of the patient is the normal symptom of Achilles Tendon Injury.
  • Patient may not able to band his foot to downward position.
  • Patient may hear snapping sound when injury appears.
  • Pain at the time of rising up and pushing off of the toes.
  • Develop nodule in the back of lower leg.

Treatment of Achilles Tendon Injury

  • Rest is the normal treatment for the patient of this disease.
  • Achilles Tendon Injury can be treated by physical therapies such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation.
  • Less use of improper footwear is the best way to prevent the Achilles Tendon Injury.
  • Ice pack must be use as soon as we can.
  • Should not use the shoes with flatter heels.
  • Sports person should change their sport activity while they are injured with this disease.
  • In severe cases patient may require surgery and foot may be put in cast.
  • Physical therapy and Cryotherapy may control the inflammation and pain.
  • Patient must use the open-back shoe to remove the pain.
  • Warm up should be done to control Achilles Tendon Injury.
  • Rehabilitation and conditioning exercise should be done.
