Acid Burn - Treatment of Acid Burn

What is Acid Burn?

An acid burn occurs because living tissue is exposed to an highly reactive chemical substance such as a strong and powerful acid or base. Acid burns can occur immediately on contact, this need no source of heat. It is extremely painful. The exact symptoms of a acid burn depend on the acid involved. It mostly occur when Hydrofluoric (HF) acid burns and it is very dangerous. It is strongest inorganic acid which is mostly uses in the factory and also in home.

Causes of Acid Burn

  • Concentrations of acids, bases, or other chemicals that can cause burns. this happens mostly because of industrial and commercial product.

  • Sulfuric acid is also causes to acid burn which occur dermal injuries by dehydration, thermal injury, and chemical injury.

  • Phosphoric acid is commonly used in metal cleaners, rust proofing is also caused to acid burn.

  • It occurs mostly to the male because of their occupation

  • Peroxides is also caused to skin problem and blistering.

  • Lithium hydride can produce thermal and alkaline burns.

Symptoms of Acid Burn

  • There may be white burn mark or erythema and pain while acid burn occur.
  • Edema and blistering can also happen at the time of acid burn
  • Necrosis is also occur with erythema and pain and edema and blistering
  • Inhalation burns may develop acute pulmonary edema.
  • Ocular burns may changed to severe pain.

Treatment of Acid Burn

  • Firstly hospitalized the patient in nearest hospital.
  • Complete decontamination should be done to treat acid burn.
  • Affected area must be clean with tepid water.
  • Milk administration used as first-aid measure.
  • Ipecac should not used for treatment of acid burn.
  • Ice pack can also use at the affected area.
  • Subcutaneous injection of Calcium Gluconate must be taken for skin treatment.
