What is Acute Myocardial Infarction?

Acute myocardial infarction is also called as heart attack. Acute MI. Acute Myocardial Infarction is defined as death or necrosis of myocardial cells. it is complete blockage of blood flow in a coronary artery. This is often & part of the heart is interrupted if the blood supply is not properly. We got blockagein the form of a blood clot in the blood vessels to the heart.

Causes of Acute Myocardial Infarction

• It is usually caused arteriosclerosis with narrowing of the coronary arteries.
• It also occurs due to intense exertion.
• A blood clot forming elsewhere in the body.

Symptoms of Acute Myocardial Infarction

• shortness of breath
• Low-grade fever
• Radiating pain in the arms and chest
• Nausea
• Lightheadedness

Treatment of Acute Myocardial Infarction

• Chest x-ray -To assess patient's heart size and the presence or absence of heart failure and pulmonary oedema
• CT Scan is to be done.
• Beta blockers, heparin are also prescribed.
• Blood tests can be performed to detect evidence of myocardial cell death.
• Oxygen, trinitrate, mnemonic,are given as soon as possible.
• Echocardiography- The aims of this therapy are are the expedient restoration of normal coronary blood flow and the maximum salvage of functional myocardium.It can identify complications, like acute mitral regurgitation, pericardial effusion.
• Intravenous nitrates should be administered.
• Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) Inhibitors which Dilate the blood vessels to increase blood flow, helps stregnthen heart muscles, lowers blood pressure (B/P)
