Adams-Stokes attack - Treatment of Adams-Stokes attack

What is Adams-Stokes attack?

Adams Stokes Attack is due to cardiac arrest usually in systole. Stokes-Adams attacks are a type of syncope of cardiac origin. Stokes-Adams attacks is caused by reduction in blood flow from the heart to the brain .Unconsciousness as a result of a to fast or to slow rhythm. Adams-Stokes attack is occur in adults having age above 40 years. Normal periods of unconsciousness are around 30 seconds.

Causes of Adams-Stokes attack

  • Adams-Stokes attack is caused by transient attacks of lightheadedness.
  • Adams-Stokes attack is caused by disorder of heart rhythm.
  • Adams-Stokes attack is caused by episodic intermittent high grade AV block.
  • Sudden slowing of the heart beat from an electrical problem
  • It is caused by complete or incomplete heart block due to disturbances of the conductive path of the heart.

Symptoms of Adams-Stokes attack

  • Patient may become pale their heart rhythm experiences a temporary pause.
  • Patient feel hot and flushed on waking.
  • Fixed pupils, incontinence, and flushing of the face.
  • Bilateral Babinski’s sign with resumption of heart beats.
  • The patient is pale and pulse less; respiration continues.
  • Convulsive movements
  • Facial flushing occurs for a minute

Treatment of Adams-Stokes attack

  • Treatment with triiodothyronine the bradycardia disappeared and the external pacemaker could be removed.
  • Catecholamine-induced cardiomyopathy may play an important role in the catastrophic terminal.
  • Atrioventricular block occurred and persisted despite steroid treatment for two weeks.
  • Surgery with use of anesthetics and antiseptics
  • Treatment must be undertaken by a qualified cardiologist.
