What is Adenomyosis?

Adenomyosis is also known as Endometriosis of the uterus. Adenomyosis is a medical term caused by the presence of ectopic endometrial tissue. Adenomyosis is mostly occur in women with the age in between 35 to 50 years. Patients with adenomyosis can have painful or profuse menses. Adenomyosis may involve the uterus focally. This disease disappear after menopause. This disease can only be diagnosed by doing a biopsy of the uterine muscle. This disease associated with external endometriosis.

Causes of Adenomyosis

The cause of adenomyosis is unknown.

• Any sort of uterine trauma.
• Excess of estrogen is the cause or adenomyosis
• Uterine symptoms
• Mass or growth within the uterus

Symptoms of Adenomyosis

• Patient causes premenstrual pain and dysmenorrhea.
• The uterus can feel soft and boggy on pelvic
• Uterine pain and bleeding
• The uterus is often 2-3 times the normal size
• Painful menstruation becomes increasingly worse
• Pelvic pain and heavy and abnormal menstrual bleeding

Treatment of Adenomyosis

• Use of NSAIDS & hormonal suppression for symptomatic relief.
• Endometrial ablation or hysterectomy for a more or less permanent cure.
• Hysterectomy is probably over 80% effective in eliminating pain and abnormal bleeding
• Gonadotropin releasing agents (e.g., Lupron ®) can be used to treat adenomyosis
• Hhysterectomy is the only cure.
• Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) are generally excellent prostaglandin inhibitors.
• Surgical treatment with preservation of the uterus.
• GnRH (gonadotropin releasing hormone) agonists have been used in a few cases, resulting in a transient decrease in uterine size.
