Alports Syndrome - Treatment of Alports Syndrome

What is Alports Syndrome?

Alports Syndrome is a kidney disease. Alports Syndrome causes blood in the urine, hearing loss and eye problems. This disease mainly occur in men than women. Alports Syndrome is usually appear in young men. Women with Alport’s syndrome are able to produce more normal collagen than men. Alports Syndrome is mild disease. At present there is no cure for Alport’s syndrome. Alport’s syndrome can vary slightly from family to family. This is rare disease. Alports Syndrome is inherited disorder damages the internal structures of the kidney and impairs their function.

Causes of Alports Syndrome

  • Alport’s syndrome is caused by an abnormality in the collagen.
  • Alport’s syndrome is caused by inheridatary disorder.
  • Alport’s syndrome is caused by defects in the genes encoding alpha-3 (IV), alpha-4 (IV), or alpha-5 (IV) chains of type IV collagen of the basement membranes.
  • Alport syndrome is caused by mutations.

Symptoms of Alports Syndrome

  • Deafness, kidney failure.
  • Hearing loss in the patient.
  • Eye problems cause blindness.
  • Blood in urine.
  • Abnormal white blood cells
  • Protein in urine.
  • Nerve problems. nerve problems
  • Immunologic abnormality of skin.

Treatment of Alports Syndrome

  • The diagnosis is usually made after kidney biopsy.
  • A simple test for blood in the urine may be used to diagnosis of Alports Syndrome.
  • Surgical-patients with AS undergo transplant develop anti-GBM nephritis.
  • Drug- Enalapril is competitive inhibitor of ACE which reduces angiotensin II levels and decreases aldosterone secretion.
  • To control kidney inflammation (nephritis), patients should control high blood levels of potassium.
  • Patient should eat a salt free diet.
  • Kidney transplantation is usually very successful in people with Alport Syndrome
