Amebiasis - Treatment of Amebiasis

What is Amebiasis?

Amebiasis is an acute or chronic inflammation caused by the parasitic amoeba, Entameba histolitica. This is usually contracted by water and any prepared food infected with poor hygiene may cause contamination. It is characterized by watery diarrhea, bloody stools and fever.

Causes of Amebiasis

  • Ambebiasis causes when person infected with Entamoeba histolytica.
  • When a person eats food or drinks water containing E.
  • It can be spread from infected person to other by stool.
  • Amebiasis occurs because of crowded living condition.
  • In the case of amebiasis infection can also spread through the blood to the liver,brain or other organs.

Symptoms of Amebiasis

  • Cramps
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Loose or watery stools
  • Abdominal tenderness or mild pain
  • Stomach cramps
  • Intestinal gas

Severe symptoms of Amebiasis include:

  • Entamoeba histolytica spreads to other organs including the lungs or brain.
  • Passage of liquid stools with streaks of blood
  • The amoebae gain access to the bloodstream and travel to the liver to form abscesses.
  • Vomiting
  • It sometimes mimics irritable bowel disease.

Treatment of Amebiasis

  • Normally amebiasis can be treated by antimicrobial medication.
  • In severe cases like amebic liver abscess hospitalization and surgery is needed.
  • In Asymptomatic intestinal infection treatment with metronidazol iodoquinol, paromomycin, or diloxanide furoate is needed.
  • More severe cases of amebic dysentery require treatment by replacing lost fluid and blood.
  • For hepatic abscess patient may use metronidazole and tinidazole.
  • When the patient is vomiting, intravenous therapy may be useful when the patient is vomiting and medications can't be tolerated by mouth.
  • Oral antiparasitic medication is also useful treatment for amebiasis.
  • There are two more drugs for Amebiasis called Luminal amebicides and Tissue amebicides.
