What is Anaphylaxis?

Anaphylaxis is also known as anaphylactic shock. Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic reaction. Anaphylaxis is a rare disease. This is affected in men and women having no ratio. Anaphylaxis is appear in any age group. Allergic reactions have been delayed 12 to 24 hours. Medicines, insect stings, foods, and latex can cause anaphylaxis. Approximately 1-2 percent of Canadians live with the risk of an anaphylactic reaction

Causes of Anaphylaxis

  • Ingestion, inhalation, skin contact or injection of a trigger substance.
  • Realese of histamine and other substances.
  • Anaphylaxis is caused by insect bites/stings, horse serum.
  • Anaphylaxis is triggered by food and drug allergy.
  • Anaphylaxis is occur due to medications and latex.
  • Anaphylaxis is caused by hymenoptera stings.

Symptoms of Anaphylaxis

  • Breathing difficulty, loss of consciousness and a drop in blood pressure
  • Shock, respiratory and cardiac failure
  • Hives, wheezing, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and swelling
  • Vascular collapse,respiratory distress.
  • Swelling of the tongue, throat, trachea.
  • Sensation of feeling the heart beat
  • Wheezing, difficulty breathing, and gastrointestinal.

Treatment of Anaphylaxis

  • Epinephrine should be given by injection without delay.
  • Prednisone may be given to reduce symptoms.
  • Albuterol is used for numerous inhaled beta-agonists are used for treatment of bronchospasm.
  • To prevent anaphylaxis, it is important to avoid the allergen that causes the reaction.
  • Medication as antihistamines to reduce the swelling and itch.
  • Steroids to reduce the allergic response.
  • Pre-loaded adrenaline injection kits are available on prescription for those believed to be at risk.
  • Maintaining proper blood pressure is important in the treatment of anaphylactic reactions.
