Angina Pectoris - Treatment of Angina Pectoris

What is Angina Pectoris?

Angina pectoris is the medical term for chest pain or discomfort due to coronary heart disease. Angina occurs when the heart’s need for oxygen increases beyond the level of oxygen available from the blood nourishing the heart. Angina Pectoris is mostly appear in female than male. The female-to-male ratio of 1.7:1. The occurrence of angina pectoris increases with age. Angina pectoris is a common condition in men over the age of 50 years. In women, it generally starts after the menopause.

Causes of Angina Pectoris

  • Blocked arteries
  • Myocardial ischemia
  • Decreased blood flow to the heart muscle
  • Sudden adrenergic discharge
  • Emotional stress, extreme temperatures, heavy meals
  • Alcohol, strenuous exercise,cigarette smoking
  • Congenital anomalies of the origin

Symptoms of Angina Pectoris

  • Mild or severe pain pressure, discomfort in the chest
  • Feeling of a squeezing, strangling, heaviness, or suffocation sensation in the chest
  • Extreme anxiety
  • Weakness
  • Pain radiating from the chest to the throat, arms, neck, and back
  • Pain may be accompanied by breathlessness, sweating and nausea

Treatment of Angina Pectoris

  • Vitamins A, C, E and various carotenoids can protect against angina pectoris.
  • Controlling high blood pressure, cigarette smoking, high cholesterol levels, and excess weight is an essential part of treatment.
  • The medication used to treat people with angina are nitrates which reduce pain by widening the blood vessels.
  • Surgery (coronary artery bypass) or angioplasty may be necessary form of treatment.
  • Treat risk factors including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity, hyperlipidemia.
  • Cut down on fatty foods, especially high fat foods if you have high blood cholesterol levels.
  • Complementary medical treatments are used to reduce levels of stress.
  • . An aspirin (75 mg to 100 mg) per day give a good result.
  • Isosorbide mononitrate and nicorandil are vasodilators commonly used in chronic stable angina.
