Angioplasty

What is Angioplasty?

Angioplasty is a medical procedure, may be surgical or non surgical which is usually proceed to widening the narrow artery and dilating the blocked blood vessels. In this procedure a equipment, usually tiny balloon is used by which catheter is inserted in to coronary artery to compress the plaque and open up the blocked artery. It is also called as balloon angioplasty. It is also proceed by x-ray which is called x-ray examination of blocked artery.

Preparation for Angioplasty

  • First doctor will ask about general health and medical history.
  • After knowing about patients health doctor will ask you for physical exam.
  • Doctor will provide instructions on what you should or should not eat or drink before procedure get start.
  • Patient may be hospitalized before procedure.
  • Patient should follow all the instructions provide by the doctor in the hospital.
  • Physician will ask the person whether you smoke or not and he will also ask that how many time symptoms occur and where.
  • Then he will ask for some test such as CT scan, duplex ultrasound, x-ray, electrocardiogram and then result of these tests will make sure that whether patient require angioplasty procedure and some other treatment.
  • Patient may have to plan for a night in hospital before procedure.

What are the equipments require for the Angioplasty procedure?

  • Catheter is a special equipment for this procedure with tiny balloon, which is like small thin plastic tube.
  • The interventional radiologist is used to guide the catheter.
  • Drug-coated stents or tiny wire mesh tube (stents) which is very useful for the procedure of angioplasty.

Common uses of Angioplasty

  • Angioplasty is useful for widening the blocked artery and increase the narrow blood vessels.
  • It decreases fatty deposits and cholesterol, known as plaque which cause artery to become blocked.
  • It is use to treat disease like Hemodialysis, Carotid artery
  • It remove the chest pain which appears because of less blood flow.
  • It reduces the damage to the heart muscle at the time of heart attack.

Risk in Angioplasty

  • Success rate of angioplasty procedure is 96 to 99%.
  • The biggest risk can be collapse in artery which may cause to heart attack.
  • Risk of dying in this procedure is 1.5%.
  • There is a risk of dying if patient have disease like diabetes or kidney disease.
