Antepartum Haemorrhage - Treatment of Antepartum Haemorrhage

What is Antepartum Haemorrhage?

Antepartum Haemorrhage refers to bleeding from vagina after 20 or 24 weeks (some people says after 28 weeks) of pregnancy till the birth of baby. It is due to fetal bleeding from vasa praevia and placenta praevia and occurs in 3% of pregnancy which is painful. This kind of vaginal bleeding may cause to perinatal mortality. Medical attention should be given otherwise it may cause to the death of mother and fetus.

Causes of Antepartum Haemorrhage

  • Causes are not found of this disease is about 40 to 47%.
  • Vasa praevia and placenta praevia are causes to Antepartum Haemorrhage.
  • Bleeding from cervical tumour may cause to infiltrating carcinoma.
  • Blood which comes from the surface if cervix because of contact bleeding is cause to this Antepartum Haemorrhage.
  • Dilated cervix with bulging membrances.

Symptoms of Antepartum Haemorrhage

  • Painless vaginal bleeding is the common symptom of Antepartum Haemorrhage.
  • Lower uterine segments develops at 28 week after which bleeding get start.
  • Dizziness is the commonest symptom and Tender abdomen is also a signs of this disease.
  • Mal presentation is the symptom of antepartum haemorrhage Bleeding may occur by intercourse.
  • At the time of Antepartum Haemorrhage blood pressure may be low and pulse rate may be fast.
  • Patient may feel cold and clammy to the touch.
  • Patient starts sweating and her skin becomes pale.

Treatment of Antepartum Haemorrhage

  • Firstly patient must be hospitalized and the treatment will be based on the examination of the patient.
  • If case is severe resuscication is the first prerequisite.
  • Asses monitor fetal heart and uterine activity to treat the patient.
  • Check fundel height
  • vaginal examination should be done untill placenta praevia is not excluded.
  • Patient must have bed rest.
  • Hydrallazine is commonly use to treat the patient.
