What is Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome?

Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome is also called antiphospholipid syndrome, Hughes Syndrome. Antiphospholipid syndrome is a disorder of the immune system. Antiphospholipid antibodies have been detected in over half of patients with the immune disease systemic lupus erythematosus. Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome is caused by .multiple different antibodies that are associated with both arterial and venous thrombosis. The female-to-male ratio is 9:1. It is more seen in women than men. Antiphospholipid syndrome is seen in between the age of 15 to 55 years.

Causes of Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome

  • Excessive clotting of blood
  • Bacterial, viral and parasite infections.
  • Antibiotics, cocaine, hydralazine, procainamide, quinine are also cause antiphospholipid antibody syndrome .

Symptoms of Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome

  • Blood clotsin both arteries and veins
  • Deep vein thrombosis of the lower extremities and the common arterial is stroke.
  • Heart valve disease, live do reticularis
  • A visible, red, thickened blood vessel.
  • Gastrointestinal
  • Cardiovascular disease.
  • Mental health problems

Treatment of Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome

  • Anti-platelet drugs such as aspirin is used.
  • Immunosuppressive agents are recommended for patients with SLE with secondary APS.
  • The diagnosis of this condition requires positive serology for the lupus anticoagulant.
  • Cyclophosphamide has been useful in some patients.
  • Cardiac valvular surgery is recommended in patients with severe aortic regurgitation as a result of APS.
  • Unfractionated IV heparin and fractionated SC LMWH are the 2 choices for initial anticoagulation therapy.
  • Enoxaparin is used to decrease risk of thrombosis and pregnancy loss in pregnant women with APS.
  • The prophylactic treatment is to maintain the patient's INR between 3.0–4.0.
