Aortic Regurgitation is also known as aortic insufficiency. Aortic regurgitation is the diastolic flow of blood from the aorta into the left ventricle. The age having more than 50 years are cause aortic regurgitation. Aortic valve regurgitation allows blood that was just pumped out of your heart to leak back into it. Aortic Regurgitation is caused by aortic valve or aortic root. In North America, Australasian, and Western Europe, where both disorders are now rare.

Causes of Aortic Regurgitation (Chronic Regurgitation)

  • Bicuspid aortic valve
  • Infections of the heart
  • Rheumatic fever and syphilis
  • Aortic dissection, bacterial endocarditis
  • Chronic aortic regurgitation
  • A congenial heart defect
  • Endocarditis
  • Endocarditis, high blood pressure

Symptoms of Aortic Regurgitation (Chronic Regurgitation)

  • Heart arrhythmias
  • Angina pectoris
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Swollen ankles and feet
  • Heart failure
  • Irregular, rapid, racing, pounding or fluttering pulse
  • Under the chest bone; pain may move to other areas of the body

Treatment of Aortic Regurgitation (Chronic Regurgitation)

  • Administration of vasodilators may be appropriate to improve systolic function and to decrease after load.
  • Aortic regurgitation may require surgical intervention according to criteria-Cardiac-thoracic ratio >0.64,Fractional shortening <25-29%
  • Surgery is usually required to repair or replace the aortic valve.
  • The use of ACE inhibitors, nifedipine, and hydralazine in improving left ventricular wall stress, ejection fraction, and mass.
  • ACE inhibitor drugs and diuretics (water pills) may be treated aortic regurgitation.
  • An electrocardiogram (ECG) can show that the left ventricle is thickened or enlarged.
  • Diuretics (water tablets) usually help if you are breathless.
