What is Aortic Stenosis?

Aortic is also knpwn as aortic valve stenosis. Aortic stenosis is a heart condition occurs due to abnormal narrowing of the aortic valve.Calcium in the blood can build up on the valve, which causes a hardening of the valve. It causes obstruction of blood flow into the circulation. Aortic valve lets blood flow from the heart's left ventricle into the aorta. In developed countreies like North America, Australasia it mainly occurs in older people.

Causes of Aortic Stenosis

  • In young peple common cause of Aortic Stenosis is birth defect.
  • Rheumatic fever-Complication of strep throat
  • Age associated degeneration
  • It can be caused by the Calcium buildup on the valve
  • Left heart ventricle become thicker

Symptoms of Aortic Stenosis

  • Shortness of breath
  • Fainting
  • Chest pain
  • Palpitations
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness

Treatment of Aortic Stenosis

  • Echocardiography is performed periodically to monitor heart and valve function.
  • Surgery-
    • The Ross procedure- It is a surgery in which your aortic valve is removed and replaced by your pulmonary valve. Then your pulmonary valve is replaced with a preserved donor pulmonary valve.
    • Aortic valve is replaced with a preserved donor valve.
    • Aortic valve is replaced with a mechanical valve.
  • Balloon valvuloplasty- Here a balloon-tipped catheter is threaded through a vein and eventually into the heart.
  • ACE Inhibitors-are medicines which help to reduce the amount of work the heart does and can ease symptoms of heart failure.
  • ECG - Every 1 to 3 years.
  • Medicines like diuretics, digoxin are prescribed.
  • Antibiotics-Erythromycin, garamycin, amoxicillin should also be given.
  • Diuretics-Normally help if you are breathless.
