What is Apgar Score?

Apgar score is devised in 1952 by Virginia Apgar. Virginia Apgar was an anesthesiologist. The Apgar score is a tool to measure a newborn's response to birth and life outside the womb and to evaluate the newborn's cardiopulmonary status during the first 5 minutes of life. It is performed by a physician or nurse. Ratings are based on the heart rate,breathing, muscle tone, reflex irritability and color. 10 is a high score and 1 is a low score. If the score is high means the baby is healthy and if the score is low it alerts a doctor for resuscitation.

Causes of low Apgar score

Fast birth
Unwell baby
cord around the neck
Baby distressed
Fetal hypoxia
Excessive suctioning of the infant's mouth and throat
Severe respiratory distress
