What is balanitis?

The alternative name of balanitis are balano-posthitis. Balanitis is an inflammation of the glans penis, caused by a bacterial infection. It is most often occur in men and boys and it can occur at any age. This condition mainly occur due to the poor hygiene. It is generally affects uncircumcised males. It usualy cure with treatment. When balanitis keeps recurring, it may be caused by a yeast infection transmitted back. In balanitis, the head and foreskin become red and inflamed. Diabetes patient are more prone to developing balanitis.

Causes of balantis

  • Dermatitis - including contact allergy .use of chemicals such as perfumed soaps and cosmetics, washing powders
  • It is usually caused by infection.
  • Balanitis may be due to the infection which in turn causes rash.
  • Diabetic patient are more prone to balanitis.
  • Balanitis circinata - It has arthritis , urethritis and conjunctivitis.
  • Irritants - neglected hygiene and tight foreskin and soreness of the head of the penis.
  • Thick, lumpy discharge under the foreskin

Symptoms of balanitis

  • swelling
  • painful foreskin
  • redness of foreskin or penis
  • foul-smelling discharge
  • rash
  • bacterial infection

Treatment of balanitis

Balanitis treatment depend upon the cause.

  • An anti-yeast cream or a course of anti-yeast tablets
  • Antibiotics will clear infection
  • If your problem is yeast infection, you will be advised to use an antifungal cream.

  • Wash the glans every day and dry the area under the foreskin
  • Use good penile hygiene
