What is Bruxism?

The Bruxism is also known as teeth grinding or clenching.It is define as a to grind the teeth and clenching of the teeth unintentionally, and at inappropriate times.Clenching means the to hold the top and bottom teeth tightly while the grinding means when you slide your teeth back and forth over each other.The clenching occurs at night is known as sleep bruxism.The speed of biting force os six time greater than the wake up.The Bruxism is occurs due to the chewing activity.Chewing activity is control by the neuromuscular activity which is controlled by the reflex pathway. which is controlled by the brain.

It is caused to the children under 5 year.The Bruxism can create the problems like jaw pain and soreness, headaches, earaches, damaged teeth, and other problems.The bruxium is related to the temporomandibular disorder.It can affects to the adults and also to the childern.It is transmitted through the genetically.It occurs in about an 20 people.

Causes of Bruxism

The Bruxism is mostly cause to the person which has nervous tension like anger,pain,or the person with aggressive,hurried.Some researchers say that it is caused due to the central nervous system.

  • It is caused due to the stress or tension.
  • It also causes due to the smoking and due to some digestive problems.
  • It is also caused due to the high consumption of alcohol.
  • Bruxism causes because of Suppressed anger or frustration.
  • Due to consumption of high level of caffeinated drinks and foods like coffee, colas, and chocolate.
  • Hypersensitivity due to presence of dopamine receptor in brain.
  • Due to stress and anxiety Bruxism is caused.

Symptoms of Bruxism

The symptoms of the Bruxism are -

  • Headache
  • Breaking of teeth.
  • Soreness and cold sensitivity.
  • Pain and tightness in jaw.
  • Chronic facial pain.
  • Insomnia, depression, eating disorders

Treatment of Bruxism

In children's treatment is required but in adult therapy is necessary while in some cases treatment is not necessory.The treatment reduce the pain and permanent damage of the teeth.

  • Stress management - It can be reduces with the help of different techniques like visual imagery and autosuggestion, aversive conditioning .Professional counseling or strategies help to promote relaxation by doing exercise and meditation,pharmacologic therapy is used to suppress REM sleep,make a changes in sleep position
  • Special night guard are suggested to the children's which have the Bruxism problem.
  • Take the muscle in relaxent position before bedtime.
  • Use the NTI device to limiting the contraction of the temporalis muscle which is fitted by your doctor.
  • Behaviour therapy prevent the grinding of muscle.
  • We can prevent to Bruxism by less intake of alcohol.
  • Prevent eating of hard food like nuts,candies.
  • MAssage your muscles of shoulder,neck,face.
  • It can prevent in childrens by talking daily with them about their feeling which help to reduce stress.

Prevention of Bruxism

  • Regular dental check up is necessary.
  • Take complete sleep is required.
