Face AbnormalAbnormalities in the appearance of the face are usually due to injury, or are congenital (present since birth). Some of the birth defects that can cause abnormal facial appearance include: - Apert syndrome, which may be associated with fingers and toes fusing together and protruding eyes. Coffin-Lowry syndrome, which maybe associated with prominent lips. Down syndrome, this may be associated with mental retardation, and a broad face with slanted eyes. Fragile X syndrome, which may be associated with over activity, small testes and mental retardation. Moebius syndrome, which may be associated with drooping eyelids, paralyzed eyes and poor facial expression. Rubenstein- Taybi syndrome, which maybe associated with an underdeveloped lower jaw and heart abnormalities.
