Salivary Gland

The saliva that comes into the mouth when smelling or eating food is produced by six glands three on each side of the mouth. The two parotid glands sit under the angle of the jaw, while the two submandibular and two submental glands are in the soft tissue under the chin.

The parotid glands have a duct each that opens into the back of the mouth near the base oft he tongue. The four other glands have ducts that join up on each side of the mouth to open under the tongue.

When food is expected by the brain, it stim ulates these glands to produce saliva, so that the mouth becomes moist in preparation. In animals, this may result in drooling. The saliva contains enzymes that commence the digestion of the food, as well as lubricating the mouth and easing the passage of the food down the throat.
